Nicklaus adopted the Golden Bear nickname early in his record setting professional career over 60 years ago. Inspired in part by Australian sportswriter Don Lawrence of the Melbourne Age and IMG Founder Mark McCormack - when they thought the young star - a powerhouse with flowing blonde hair looked like a “big golden bear.” The rest as they say is history and thus was born one of the most recognized nicknames and logos in sports history.
